Someone has said that nothing is a zero with the rim removed. The dictionary defines it as something that does not exist. While this is true, when we get a biblical perspective we discover that nothing can be the beginning of something. Consider several uses of the word in the Bible:
All nations before Him are as nothing, And they are counted by Him less than nothing and worthless. Isaiah 40:17
I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me. John 5:30
And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it–lest you even be found to fight against God. Acts 5:38
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. I Corinthians 13:2
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. John 15:5
Yes Lord, without You we can do nothing! Amen.
The hymn, Rock of Ages, has this beautiful couplet: Nothing in my hand I bring Simply to thy cross I cling.
